The research result, entitled "Diagnostic accuracy of procalcitonin on POD3 for the early diagnosis of anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery: a meta-analysis and systematic review", of the CSU undergraduate extracurricular research training group instructed by Professor Liu Weidong of Xiangya Hospital was published in the International Journal of Surgery (IF: 13.400, Vol. 100) in 2022. Xu Zheng’ao, a fourth-year undergraduate from Central South University Xiangya School of Medicine, is the first author, Professor Liu Weidong is the corresponding author, and Xiangya Hospital, Central South University is the first affiliation and the corresponding affiliation.
College students' participation in research training began with "The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program" (UROP) set up by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969, which aims to encourage college students to participate in teachers' scientific research projects. Subsequently, the University of California and Stanford University have carried out similar programs to encourage college students to participate in scientific research, and have achieved remarkable results in undergraduate research training. In 2006, China’s Ministry of Education launched the "College Students' Innovative Experiment Program" to carry out innovative research training programs for college students at the national level, so as to improve their innovative skills and practical ability. For this reason, Central South University has specially formulated the Measures for the Administration of Undergraduate Extracurricular Research of the Central South University, and has worked out a detailed implementation plan for college students to carry out extracurricular research. The Outline of the National Medium- and Long-Term Program for Science and Technology Development (2006-2020) specifies that college students should be encouraged to participate in scientific research to cultivate their interest in exploration and promote their scientific and innovative spirit in practice. Therefore, improving the innovative skills and research ability of college students has important strategic significance for the country to cultivate high-caliber professionals with innovative spirit and practical ability.
With all-round education comprehensively promoted in China, in addition to solid political accomplishment, morals and professional skills, college students are also required to have innovative skills and practical ability. When college students participate in extracurricular research activities and carry out preliminary research work under the guidance of their supervisors, their mindset needed for scientific research is systematically trained in this process, and more importantly, they can also improve their ability in operation, problem-solving, communication and teamwork. This way of training would enrich undergraduates’ second classroom, broaden their minds, and allow them to transfer knowledge into practice. It is an important form of auxiliary teaching in undergraduate training, enabling to improve students’ comprehensive quality and the training quality, and is also a powerful measure to cultivate innovative talents.
Professor Liu Weidong, Director of the Department of Basic Surgery, Xiangya Hospital, taking colorectal and anal surgical diseases as the research direction and focusing on multidisciplinary integration, has been long committed to laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery for colorectal and anal diseases as well as comprehensive treatment of colorectal tumors, and has completed more than 5,000 cases of laparoscopic colorectal surgery. For specific diseases with complex conditions, Professor Liu Weidong who leads the multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT) team for anorectal and pelvic floor diseases in Xiangya Hospital pools multidisciplinary experts with complementary advantages to jointly discuss and develop a "standardized and individualized" diagnosis and treatment scheme, so as to improve the definite diagnosis rate and cure rate of complex and difficult diseases. Up to now, nearly 300 MDT consultations have been carried out, and more than 3,000 patients have benefited from MDT consultations. Professor Liu Weidong has innovated such surgical operations as pelvic floor defect repair with rectus abdominis pedicled myocutaneous flap after resection of giant anorectal tumor and resection of giant abdominal tumor. Moreover, he has also devoted to the training of physicians in laparoscopic and endoscopic minimally invasive surgery, established the operation flow and training system of colorectal laparoscopic surgery, and trained more than 600 gastrointestinal surgeons with intermediate and senior professional titles from 30 provinces and cities in China. In particular, organized by Professor Liu Weidong and supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the "Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) International Training Workshop on Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery" was started on October 18, 2021. More than 40 surgeons from 19 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and South America received a 20-day training, effectively promoting the development and progress of laparoscopic surgery in gastrointestinal surgery in the countries along the BRI route, spreading China's experience in the medical and health services to every corner of the BRI and greatly increasing the international influence of Chinese gastrointestinal surgical technique.
