On May 27, the grand opening ceremony of the Xiangya Sino-US Pathology Symposium, hosted by Hunan Clinical Pathology Quality Control Center and organized by Department of Pathology of Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, was grandly held in Xiangya Hospital. With numerous American and Chinese pathologists participated in the symposium online(on network) or offline(on site), the symposium was a wonderful academic gathering for pathologist peers at home and abroad.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Xiao Desheng, Deputy Director of the Department of Pathology of Xiangya Hospital. Prof. Jiang Hong, Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Central South University, Prof. Liu Longfei, Vice President of Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Prof. Liang Zhiyong from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Pathology of Chinese Medical Association, Prof. Tan Jianyou, President of the Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association and visiting professor of Xiangya Hospital, Prof. Wang Liang from Keck School of Medicine of USC, Prof. Li Jing from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine,Prof. Wang Jian from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, Prof. Lu Zhaohui from Department of Pathology of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Prof. Zhou Jianhua, Chairman of Pathology Committee of Hunan Medical Association and Director of the Department of Pathology of Xiangya Hospital, Prof. Fan Songqing, Director of the Department of Pathology of the Second Xiangya Hospital, Prof. Chu Ling, Director of the Department of Pathology of the Third Xiangya Hospital, and Chief Physician Li Junjun of Hunan Cancer Hospital attended the opening ceremony online or offline.
Prof. Liang Zhiyong of Peking Union Medical College Hospital pointed out that sharing cutting-edge knowledge and technology in pathologic diagnosis through international exchanges contributes to the stable long-term development of Sino-US pathology studies. Prof. Jiang Hong of the School of Basic Medical Sciences said that Pathology links Basic Medicine with Clinical Medicine. Organization of high-level conferences such as the Symposium would effectively promote academic exchanges and cooperation in Pathology, boost the standardization of tumor pathology diagnosis, accelerate the translation of basic medicine to clinical medicine, and render the study of Pathology the backbone of future medical advances. Prof. Liu Longfei, Vice President of Xiangya Hospital, fully acknowledged the achievements of Department of Pathology of Xiangya Hospital in areas of discipline development, specialty reputation, and talent training. He emphasized that the rich content of the Symposium shall benefit all participants. Prof. Tan Jianyou, President of Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association, expressed his wishes for more high-level exchanges between Chinese and American pathologists in the future with the rapid development of the academic field. Prof. Zhou Jianhua, Chairman of Pathology Committee of Hunan Medical Association and Director of the Department of Pathology of Xiangya Hospital, Prof. Fan Songqing, Director of the Department of Pathology of the Second Xiangya Hospital and Prof. Chu Ling, Director of the Department of Pathology of the Third Xiangya Hospital also delivered address expressing their willingness to participate in international exchanges for the promotion of integration and sharing of knowledge and technology in Pathology.
Over ten American and Chinese specialists in the field of Pathology delivered excellent speeches at the Symposium. Prof. Wang Jian of Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center shared his discovery in molecular pathology of soft tissue tumors; Prof. Tan Jianyou, President of Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association, gave a lecture titled “Pathology and Exploration of Tumor Microenvironment”, shedding light on innovative scientific research for clinical workers; Prof. Li Jing from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine shared her interpretations on the latest progress of the 2021 WHO Classification of Lung Tumors; Prof. Lu Zhaohui from the Department of Pathology of Peking Union Medical College Hospital explained the pitfalls in the pathological diagnosis of gynecological biopsies through relevant patient cases; Prof. Wangliang from Keck School of Medicine of USC shared his diagnostic experience and presented patient cases of non-ewings small round cell tumors; Prof. Wang Guoping, Director of the Pathology Department of Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science & Technology, shared his knowledge in pathological diagnosis through intraoperative frozen section of lung tumor and its influencing factors; Prof. Zhou Qiao, Director of Department of Pathology of West China Hospital of Sichuan University gave lecture on the advances of pathological diagnosis of renal tumors; Prof. Liang Li, Director of Department of Pathology of Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University presented the research progress of liquid biopsy in accurate diagnosis, treatment and early screening of colorectal cancer; Prof. Fan Songqing of the Second Xiangya Hospital shared common diagnosis and differential diagnosis of mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract through patient cases and detailed illustrations; Prof. Xiao Desheng, Department of Pathology of Xiangya Hospital gave speech on the diagnosis and case study of exfoliative cytology of pleural fluid; Prof. Shao Chunkui of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University introduced the diagnosis, grading and staging of chronic viral hepatitis; Prof. Chu Ling,Department of Pathologyt of the Third Xiangya Hospital shared his patient cases of head and neck cancers; and Prof. Su Zhansan of the Third Xiangya Hospital gave lecture on intraoperative frozen section diagnosis of gynecologic tumors. The experts delivered keynote speeches on subjects such as the progress of pathological diagnosis, molecular pathology, and tumor microenvironment from the angle of different specialties, presenting a wonderful academic symposium for Chinese and American peers.
In an era of post-pandemic the symposium attracted many Chinese and American peers from a great variety of institutions with its online/video format. Targeting frontier fields, the Symposium comprehensively covers both pathological research development and clinical practices, further promoting the development of pathology studies. Successfully organized thanks to the concerted efforts of both Chinese and American pathologists, the Symposium also promotes the standardization and internationalization of pathological diagnosis, provides more accurate guidance for disease prognosis judgment and individualized treatment, and contributes to the improvement of clinical practices and patient treatment.
